Valheim: Survive as a Viking! (Review)

So here you are, years after Minecraft was a hit for the kids and you think, “Man, I wish they had something like this but better.” Well, Iron Gate made Minecraft for adults. A brutal exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by Viking culture. Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odin’s patronage! So, are you ready to take on all the beasts and bosses of purgatory?

At first, it was a bit hard to grasp all the things you can do because the game feels a bit clunky at first. But as you advance and get better at building and designing battle systems, you start to catch on. You soon find yourself building castles and mining for copper and tin to make bronze armor so you can take on the next boss. They made this building/survival game fun for all ages. So far, I have personally fought the first two bosses and I am stuck on the third boss: Bonemass. To beat him, I’m stocking up on poison potions. I also need an iron mace which means I have to hunt the swamps for crypts to get iron. This game requires so much just to advance to the next set of new items to build and make your character better.

What is next:

The developers are killing it. They’ve already sold over 5 million copies as an early access beta game and they’re delivering almost weekly updates. Since these updates fix things we players find and report, you start to feel like you’re not only playing the game, but you are also helping to define what it will become. Every month the dev team publishes their plans for what’s next on STEAM for the gamer community. I gotta say, it’s looking pretty good.

Rating: 8.5 / 10

I am giving it a 8.5 out of 10. The fundamentals are great, but I’m taking a little off because the frame rate drops when gamers are doing too many things in one area. That’s partly a testament to the game’s popularity, and something the team can fix by allocating server resources better. Despite this minor shortcoming, I recommend anyone and everyone to play this game if you like survival games, Minecraft, and Vikings.
