The team-based first-person shooter was created by Valve Corporation and released on August 21, 1999. Counter-Strike pits a team of counter-terrorists against a terrorist organization known as the “Free Army.” The object is to eliminate the opposing team’s players and rescue or guard hostages. Counter-Strike received an award from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Gaming Hall of Fame in 2001 also was put on Time Magazine’s list of the best 100 video games of all time.
Counter-Strike is a team-based first-person shooter for up to sixteen players connected over a local area network. The objective for both teams is to eliminate the opposing team. Team members can choose their character from a set of eight terrorists and counter-terrorists. Each character has a unique appearance, name, gender, realistic skin, and realistic clothes.
The team members for each side must cooperate to accomplish the objective and survive. As terrorists, players are divided into two groups: Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists. As a terrorist, players can plant bombs, attack and kill opposing team members, decimate the communication network of the opposing team, and escort hostages through areas. As counter-terrorists, players try to protect hostages or destroy enemy communication (bomb sites).
There are two main types of game modes in Counter-Strike: a hostage rescue mode and a demolition mode. In the hostage rescue mode, one counter-terrorist (a VIP) must be rescued by eliminating the opposing team. The demolition mode is played when one of the two bomb sites is exploded. The winning team is decided when players on one side are killed, or all hostages are rescued/killed. If both bomb sites are destroyed, the game is a draw, and it is not counted in the final standings. Once a player is eliminated in Counter-Strike, the team cannot be “reborn” on the same side. Instead, you must respawn on your side. The game ends when a winning team has been declared.
There are twenty different weapons in Counter-Strike for players to use. The weapons are divided into seven groups: pistols, shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, grenades, knives, and miscellaneous weapons. Players must switch between primary and secondary weapons to use the correct weapon for each situation. Pistols are the weakest (exposed) weapons in the game but have quick-firing capabilities. Shotguns kill opponents at close range due to their widespread of pellets. Machine guns produce a lot of damage with their fast firing rate and incredible accuracy at long ranges. Sniper rifles are used when enemies at long distances are targeted.
